Eastern UP, a land soaking in the Ganges, steeped in culture, soaring on the wings of age old
wisdom of seers is also spiced with politics and simmering with discontent due to so much of
energy dictating the political fortunes of the region flowing from here…
It is very exciting to hear the very knowledgeable people here debate politics, but in the
culturally rich world of Eastern UP, its bit sad too, to see the cultural discussions taking a total
back seat to the political discourse! Raised pitch with selective use of history and its
generalization has reduced the space for social and cultural discourse of humanity in that area.
As if there is no space for the assimilation of ideas, if the ideology differs! Which actually leaves
a very narrow ground for cultivating harmony and brotherhood based on mutual understanding.
There should be a balance between socio-political and cultural discourse for the people to live a
positive and healthy community life. To explore the need for multicultural and broad based
social narrative, “Buddha Se Kabir Tak” yatra was planned by Gorakhpur based SMR Trust.
The reason of selection of yatra name “Buddha Se Kabir Tak” was very logical. Yatra has to
have some starting and endpoint. Location of Kushinagar and Maghar on two sides of
Gorakhpur City were found very appropriate in selecting the name as well as deciding start and
end point. Kushinagar is Mahaparinirvan Sthal of Buddha and Maghar happens to be Samadhi
Sthal of Kabir.
